Plot and structure
A young, smart and impressive boy had divorced parents. He still thinks that his mother is dead. The whole time
he is trying to find out who had killed the neighbor’s dog. One day at school Christopher told
Siobhan that his father told him, he couldn’t do any more detecting which meant
that the book, which he had written of Wellington, was finished. Christopher
showed him pages he had written so far, with the diagram of the universe and
the map of the street and the prime numbers. She said the book was really good
as it was, and he should be very proud of having written a book at all, even if
it was short. Christopher didn’t like to think that the person who killed
Wellington could be living somewhere nearby and he might meet him when he went
out for a walk at night. He told her, that his father said to him, he was never
to mention Mr Shears name in their house again, and that he was an evil man and
perhaps that meant he was the person who killed Wellington. Then, Siobhan asked
him, maybe his father doesn’t like Mr Shears very much. Mr Shears used to be
married to Mr Shears and he left her, like in a divorce. But it wasn’t the end
of the book, because five days later he saw Mrs Alexander, the old lady from
number 39. They walked along the street were met with Ivor. Christopher never
speaks to strangers, but he wants to be investigating Wellington’s murder and
the reason he was asking about Mr Shears. After a long time, Mrs Alexander
asked Christopher, did he know that his mother before she died, was very very
very good friends with Mr Shears. But Mr Alexander didn’t mean to say anything
that as going to upset Christopher. He only tried to explain the relationship
between Christopher’s mother and Mr Shears, and why his father doesn’t want him
going around talking to people about Mr Shears. Because that will bring back
bad memories…

Christopher still thinks that his mother went into
hospital, because she had something wrong with her heart. And then she had
a heart attack and died. After a long time, Christopher founds out some
information about his mother. Christopher went to father’s bedroom, because he
was looking for a book, which he was writing about Wellington being killed, and
he opened up the cupboard and lifted the toolbox off the top of the shirt box
and opened the shirt box. He counted the letters. There were 43 of them. They
were all addressed to him in the same handwriting. He took fourth out and
opened it. He couldn’t believe what is happening to him. He founds out that his
mother had not had a heart attack. She hadn’t died. She had been alive all the
time. And his father had lied about this. He was silent for a really long
time. When his father saw how Christopher reads those letters, he didn’t
know what he is going to say. Christopher’s father and Mrs Shears become very
good friends. She was helping out with the cooking and the cleaning. At the
end, Christopher’s father said that he killed the dog, because he thought she
cared more for the dog, than for him, for them. Christopher decided to live
with his mother, because father killed Wellington, and he lied and Christopher
is frightened of being in the house with father. Than, Christopher had decided
to go to London on his own. He took cashpoint card so he gets money out and a
policeman helped him. He spent several days in the same house with his mother
and Roger. But his mother was tired of everything. She decided to go to
Swindon. Christopher took his Math A level, and he got an A grade which is the
best result. And at the end of the book, Christopher got the dog. He is two
months old. And he is a Golden Retriever. Christopher called the dog Sandy.
